September Decides Your Entire Year
If you’re anything like me, you can feel the energy shift as summer winds down.
While you might be drowning in back-to-school transition and endless “catchup”, the smart operators are doing something different. They're treating September like the most important 30 days of their entire year.
Because here's what most founders miss:
Q4 isn't won in Q4.
It's won right now. In September. While most business owners are burning out in day to day reaction mode.
Why September Is Your Last Shot at Greatness
Picture this: It's December 31st.
Scenario A: You're staring at your bank account, wondering where the year went. Your goals? Half-finished. Your team? Burned out. Your biggest opportunities? Someone else grabbed them.
Scenario B: You're celebrating the best quarter of your life. Revenue is up. Your team is energized. Customers are raving. You actually hit the goals that mattered.
The difference between these two scenarios?
What you do in the next 30 days.
Q4 hits like a freight train. Everyone's scrambling. Budgets are tight. Decision-makers disappear for holidays.
If you're not primed and ready by October 1st, you're already behind.
The September Success Formula
Step 1: Get Out of the Weeds (Seriously)
Your calendar is packed. Your inbox is exploding. I get it.
But the most successful operators do something that feels crazy:
They stop working IN their business (at least for for a few hours to sometimes a week or more).
For now, Block out 3-4 hours this week. Turn off notifications. Lock the door.
Ask yourself these four questions:
What's actually working right now?
Where are we wasting time and energy?
What big opportunities could we still grab this year?
What could blindside us in Q4?
Don't skip this. Companies that take time to think at this level consistently outperform those that just grind harder.
Step 2: Remember Why You Started This Thing
When markets get crazy (like they are now), most founders stop thinking big.
Big mistake.
Your vision isn't some fluffy "mission statement" for your website. It's a roadmap to your company’s full potential. It's what keeps you making smart decisions when everything feels uncertain.
"Vision without action is just a dream. Action without vision is just busy work."
Try this:
Close your eyes. Picture yourself three years from now. Everything went right. Your business is thriving.
How do customers talk about you?
What are you most proud of?
How has your life changed?
Now work backward: What needs to happen in Q4 to keep you on that path?

Step 3: Face the Truth About Q3
Before you plan Q4, you need to know where you actually stand.
Time for some brutal honesty:
What did you promise yourself you'd do in Q3?
What actually happened?
Which projects moved the needle vs. which ones just burned time?
Where did your numbers land vs. where you wanted them?
The companies that dominate Q4 aren't the ones that work harder…they're the ones that learn faster.
Do a clean Q3 debrief:
Close out unfinished projects
Check your real numbers (not your hopeful ones)
Get your team to share their biggest wins and lessons
No blame. Just learning.
Step 4: Pick Your Q4 Battles (And Actually Win Them)
Here's where most operators mess up: They try to do everything.
You're not going to revolutionize your entire business in Q4. But you CAN nail 4-6 things that actually matter.
Use this filter:
Will this move significantly impact revenue, customers, or efficiency?
Can we actually finish this by December 31st?
Do we have the right person clearly responsible for it?
For each goal:
Make it specific and measurable
Assign ONE person to own it
Set monthly check-ins
Got room for more?: Leave room for one experiment. Q4 is perfect for testing something new while you still have time to course-correct.
Step 5: Don't Set It and Forget It
The best operators don't just plan quarterly…they steer monthly.
