MO | Edition 3 – The Power of Vision: Your Company's Guiding Star

June 10, 20254 min read

Hey there —

It's tempting to view creating a long-term vision as a luxury rather than a necessity.

Yet, the truth is exactly the opposite: clarity in vision isn't just beneficial—it's required, particularly in challenging times.

A clear 3-to-5-year vision acts as your company's North Star. It aligns your team around shared objectives, sharpens focus, and drives meaningful traction.

Without a clear vision, teams drift.

Energy scatters.

Momentum stalls.

Let's look into why a living, breathing vision, a Modern Vision is essential and how you can build yours.

Why The Modern Vision Matters

  • Alignment drives growth: Companies with clearly communicated visions experience revenue growth 2.8 times higher than those without (Forbes).

  • Engagement matters: Just 22% of employees strongly agree that their company's leadership has a clear direction for the future, directly correlating to reduced employee engagement and productivity (Gallup).

  • Clear vision boosts execution: Organizations lacking clear vision see up to a 40% decline in execution efficiency, causing delays, frustration, and lost opportunities (McKinsey).

Vision is not just a feel-good exercise, it's a strategic action that determines where your company invests resources, from products and marketing to sales and fulfillment.

Vision Creates Clarity & Clarity Is Your First Multiplier

Clarity multiplies your team's effectiveness.

When everyone knows exactly where they're headed, decisions become simpler, execution is faster, and alignment is stronger.

Vision ensures your leadership team knows how to guide and prepare the staff—not only in the present but months ahead, continuously cycling between execution today and preparation for tomorrow.

Without vision, your team's rhythm breaks, and confusion sets in.

Remember, vision isn't "set it and forget it."

It's a dynamic roadmap reviewed quarterly and annually, refined as your company grows and evolves.

Building Your Vision: The Modern Way

As growth strategists, here's the exact process we recommend you follow.

Set aside dedicated, uninterrupted time with your leadership team.

IMPORTANT: When performing this exercise, don’t answer these questions from the present. Instead, walk your team through a mental exercise to travel into the future 3-5 years and then have them describe what they see.

KEY: Focus on the what — not on the how (that will come later) Here’s the questions to describe in detail:

  1. Visionary Snapshot: What does our company look like today?

  2. Signature Offerings: Which products or services are we most proud of, and how do they define our brand today?

  3. Customer Relationships: Who are our ideal customers now, and what remarkable experiences and outcomes are we consistently delivering?

  4. Team and Culture: Describe our team. What are our size, capabilities, and the unique aspects of our company culture?

  5. Financial & Impact Milestones: What significant financial and impact milestones have we achieved in the past 3–5 years?

  6. Strategic Alliances: What key partnerships and alliances have we formed that have significantly accelerated our success?

  7. Impact & Significance: Why is this achievement deeply meaningful to us? How has it impacted our team, our customers, and our broader community?

Your Final Vision Deliverable:

At the conclusion of this exercise, you'll have a compelling list of 10–20 crystal-clear vision descriptors.

Anyone reading these statements should immediately grasp exactly where your company is headed.

Example descriptors might include:

  • "$30M in annual revenue with 25% profit margins."

  • "The go-to solution for AI-driven business coaching for 10,000+ SMBs."

  • "Globally recognized for exceptional customer satisfaction—95% retention rates."

  • "A vibrant, fully remote team of 150 professionals across three continents."

  • "Annual innovation events that attract industry leaders and media coverage."

Once complete with your Vision, you can start to leverage what you captured to solve some immediate problems to get there.

Now could be the right time to ask:

  1. Challenges Overcome: Looking back, what major challenges did we overcome, and how did we do it?

  2. Continuous Progress: How have we consistently measured progress and maintained alignment with our vision over these years?

Keep Your Vision Alive:

  • Quarterly Check-ins: Review your Vision to ensure you are still aligned with the direction you are heading.

  • Annual Deep Dives: Revisit and tighten your vision comprehensively at annual planning sessions. You’ll actually go thru the same mental projection process that you used here.

  • Consistent Visibility: Ensure your decisions around product, marketing, sales and fulfillment are in alignment with your vision. In the beginning, read through your vision again at team meetings, company communications, and performance discussions.

Remember, the best visions are audacious enough to excite and inspire, yet attainable enough to galvanize your team’s effort.

It should give you goosebumps yet remain within reach with deliberate, focused action.
